Grants to fund improvements at Silver Spring, Hampden intersections

State Rep. Greg Rothman on Tuesday announced two grants from the Commonwealth Financing Authority to improve intersections in Silver Spring and Hampden townships. A $400,000 grant was awarded to Silver Spring Township through the Multimodal Transportation Fund Program and will be used to improve the intersection at Silver Spring Road and Woods Drive. The township plans to install a traffic signal with pedestrian actuated signals, and will also widen Silver Spring Road and provide turning lanes onto Woods Drive.
Stormwater improvements include the installation of new inlets, cross pipes, the replacement of the existing box culvert and regrading of the existing swales. The total project cost is $2.1 million. “I am pleased to see the township’s requests were approved, as it faces significant traffic safety concerns at the intersection of Silver Spring Road and Woods Drive,” Rothman said in a news release. “As Silver Spring Township continues to develop and traffic congestion increases, intersection improvements, such as new traffic signals and road-widening projects, are going to be vital.”
Hampden Terminal II LLC was awarded a $600,000 grant from the authority for improvements to the intersection of St. Johns Church Road and the Carlisle Pike in Hampden Township. Hampden Terminal plans to redevelop about 15 acres along the Carlisle Pike into a mix of one- and two-bedroom apartments, retail and commercial use. Because of that project, there are plans to improve the intersection to increase capacity, reduce traffic congestion and provide a more walkable and pedestrian-friendly community, Rothman said. Funds will be used for demolition, excavation/grading, legal costs, construction of a two-way center left turn lane along St. Johns Church Road, a right turn lane at the intersection, and a dedicated right turn lane to the east as an exiting private driveway on Carlisle Pike.
